I read that children who read by age 3 are less likely to have learning disabilities in other areas. Plus, reading is just so fun and enriching!

As a former teacher (before motherhood), I quickly learned how impotant reading is to the future success of children, both in school and in their long term success as citizens. It is important to emphasize reading and writing in children from an early age so that they have a better chance at life. If you can read, you can learn easier and become smarter. Books open up new experiences and knowledge.

Babies are born learners and love exploring the world around them. I do believe that you can make learning fun for babies and young children and they will learn just because they are enjoying it, not because they are being pushed to do it. The younger a child is, the easier it is for them to learn new things.

As a former language arts teacher, I saw every day why it was important for kids to read. My students who came from reading-focused home had stronger bonds with their family and higher academic success. They also had broader vocabularies and a stronger sense of self.

I was a book worm as a child (still am) and am trying to instill the same love of books in my own daughter now, even if she isn’t even 1 years old!

Oh, I would love to win this! I’ve been teaching my daughter how to read ever since she was born! (Well, we started by just reading books and then learning the alphabet and then the sounds. Now we’re finally putting it all together.) I do think it is important to teach kids to read. I can just see my daughter’s self-esteem grow as she discovers that she can sound out small words. I think that reading at a young age gives children a big boost in their learning curve and feeds their active minds. Thanks for the giveaway.

Well, I’m a reading teacher, so of course I know how important it is to begin reading at an early age. I often see students who did not have those early skills, and they are always a little bit behind. Being just a little bit behind might not seem like a big deal, but it just gets worse and worse. By the time the kids get to middle school, where I am, they are 2-3 years behind.

In addition to all the more appropriate reasons for development, etc - my girls LOVE books and it would be nice if they could read to themselves instead of just making me read to them all the time! :)

It is supposedly a proven fact that writing helps children learn to read, and reading is the key to learning. I don’t know that you can scientifically prove it, but it makes sense. It also doesn’t hurt to teach children to read early to instill in them a love for reading when they are older.

I think it is important to teach reading and writing at an early age because literacy is so important. It is so surprising and disappointing that we still have problems with this in the US. I would love this for my daughter!

I think it’s important to emphasize reading at an early age because reading is an important life skill that everybody needs. My mom said that before I started kindergarten I knew how to read and she thinks that’s why I did well in school and why I love to read now. In grade school I would always want to read outloud because I was confident in my reading abilities. I think part of it can be contributed to being able to read at a young age. My daughter will be 3 soon and we try to limit her TV time and read stories together often. I hope she’ll be able to begin learning letters very soon. In an age where TV is a big part of entertainment, I think it’s more important than ever to focus on reading and writing skills for young children. It’ll make it easier for them to learn in school because it won’t be as “new” to them. The problem is, too many parents leave it up to the schools to teach and don’t reinforece the skills at home.

We are serious readers in this house. We took our formal living room and are making into a library (with built-in bookshelves floor to ceiling, under and above the window and even above the door! We started reading with our little one from the very first day she was placed in our arms, and we read all day long (not just at bedtime!). The world is a great big place and reading is a wonderful way to see it all. :)

the reason i feel it’s important is becuz they have proven that a young child’s brain grows more in the first 5 years, and can take in more information,so we need to teach as much as we can!

I truly believe that the fact my mom started reading to me from an early age gave me a head start in school. I developed quite an extensive vocabulary at an early age. Due to this I have started reading to my kids soon after birth. I want to give them that same early start I had.

Being a writer and avid reader myself, it’s important for my children to also be great readers! Reading expands your mind and knowledge. If you don’t know about panda bears, but you read a book (w/ accurate info) on pandas, then you will have gained some knowledge!

I just love books. Period. Sometimes it’s hard to explain!

I work on reading and writing with my daughter who will be starting kindergarten because I enjoy watching her learn new things and knowing that I’m able to show her and teach her is very rewarding. I think all children benefit from this attention I know my daughter will be starting kindergarten with a confidence about her reading and writing abilities and I think that she’ll grow even more! I think reading with children is important for several reasons. It helps develop their cognitive abilities, helps develop their language skills and it is just good, old fashion time spent together. It helps develop a rapport with your kids from an early age and gives you an activity in common. Reading to and with your kids is a very important family activity on many levels.
