Toddler reading at 17 months old

by Bill on March 7th, 2008

Either this girl is a four year old with a thyroid problem or she’s a genius. Elizabeth Barret, a 17 month old from Texas (and the daughter of speech pathologists) demonstrates the importance of reading to your child from an early age. Her parents have read to her from birth and the results are astounding.

Not only does she demonstrate her ability to read her own books, but she successfully reads words written by the news crew and random words in magazines. The Fox Carolina news video of this girl reading is rather impressive.

Reading so early is not that unusual. There’s even a website about a book called Native Reading that describes a method a scientist-father developed that teaches kids to read as toddlers, entirely through play and reading with parents. The link is http://www.nativereading.com.
