The year in parenting news review

by Bill on December 21st, 2007

One of the biggest stories of the year for parents was the revelation that many toys are apparently slathered in lead, and we were all none the wiser. In addition to the seemingly endless recalls of Chinese-manufactured toys in violation of lead standards, there were some other stories that impacted modern parenting, right down to problems with infant cough syrup.

Townonline.com has a list of the top news themes in 2007 that sought to change the face of parenthood, including a person attempting to change spanking legislation.

It’s not the first time a well-meaning individual sought to have the state Legislature make spanking illegal, but the outcry before November’s hearing on the latest attempt stung. Spanking is illegal in many countries, but the citizen’s petition to outlaw this form of discipline by Massachusetts parents wasn’t given good odds of making it to the governor’s desk.

One thing not mentioned in this list is the overly apparent melt-down of several horrible celebrity parents; Kate Moss, David Hasselhoff, Courtney Love and of course the ring leader of bad celeb parents, Britney Spears. While there were quite a few good famous moms and dads also in the news, the bad ones always make the bigger media splash, and 2008 is right around the corner ready to bring a new batch of ridiculous stories about parenting.
