The Tone of Summer
It still amazes me the difference there is between Summer and Winter. I completely understand Maine is notorious for extremely cold Winters and hot and humid Summers. The difference is not in shoveling snow or mowing the lawn. The two different seasons are a complete life style change. Here are a few things I can think of:
1) The food we eat and how we prepare it. Summer time is time to grill steaks and chicken. Winter time you bake it in a glass pan. Winter foods are different too. We tend to eat frozen veggies all Winter long. Summer time it is fresh veggies… more salads, etc.
2) There is 5 more hours of daylight at the end of the day. Not only that but there is more daylight first thing in the morning. On June 21st it doesn’t get dark until 9pm and the sun comes up between 5 and 5:30am. It’s fairly normal to see the kids get up early, grab some food, slip into new clothes and play outside before 8am.
3) People just seem free to come and go more with being invited over. Not sure what this is all about. Maybe the fact that going outside in the Winter entails putting on warm clothes, a jacket, hat, and gloves. In the Summer time you just grab your keys and go as is. But in the Winter it is more about calling, making dinner plans with relatives in advance, and then showing up on time. Summer time brings something out in all of us that you can come and go without those plans. People show up and if they are late, then they are late. What’s the big deal? Could this mean people are less uptight in the Summer?
4) Busier. Winter time is time for routine. It is time to sit back, focus on getting through the Winter months on a scheduled routine. Summertime is bad for routine. Nothing is routine. It is trips to the lake, unexpected visits, and unplanned trips to go swimming. We tend to be busier but a lot less uptight.
5) Projects. Summer time is for projects. Winter time is not the time to start anything cause you may not finish it. Summer time it is about repairs, new additions, painting, and so on.
I could probably go on and on, but I basically live 2 different lifestyles. One is for the Summer and the other is for Winter. Is it like this where you live?
