The magic of bath time

By the time I get home from work, I often have only about an hour and a half to spend with my 3 month old son before his bed time. I see him before work in the morning, but this is still much less time than I would like. However, although my time with him is punctuated by work, I am lucky enough to be part of his bath time at night.
Somewhere around 6 or 6:30, we pull out his big blue plastic tub and fill it with warm water. We dip his toes in first to let him know what’s coming, and he usually starts to smile and kick with excitement. As I set him in the turquoise mesh sling that runs the length of the tub, he gives me a quick smirk and lounges back with legs carelessly hanging over each side of the sling like a grown man laying in a hammock.
I gently wash him, paying particular attention to get any rogue drool and spit-up remnants from his many chins. He honestly doesn’t get that dirty, the bath is more about the calming effect than the cleaning effect. He sits there perfectly content, looking around, splashing and cooing.
He flashes some of his largest, toothless grins when he’s in the tub. He’s perfectly willing to have a conversation with you and smiles as though my wife and I are the wittiest people on the planet. Some day he’ll learn the truth, but it’s nice to have such an adoring audience while it lasts.
Even when he’s cranky and fidgeting, the magic of bath time turns him into an angel. As little time as I get to spend with him, I have to say that I am truly lucky to get to experience him during bath time.

I have the same problem with my son. If I leave work much later than 5:30 he’ll be asleep by the time I get home. It is sad. There was one day recently when I didn’t see him at all.
I too am the one that does the baths. It is awesome.
