The alien in my wife’s tummy

by Bill on November 15th, 2007

With less than two weeks until the official due date, my wife’s tummy is taking on the distinct appearance of a holding cell for a small alien. The baby’s movements now completely distort the shape of her stomach and look more like a person moving around beneath a blanket rather than the smooth and placid movements of earlier on in the pregnancy.

I came home for lunch today and decided to put on some music, at which point my wife’s belly began undulating as if the baby were trying to make his own escape through her belly button. People often claim that music in utero is good for child development, which I can’t necessarily comment on. I think that would be a very difficult thing to objectively prove, however our little sprout seems energized by classical music and almost always moves along to the tunes. His movements subside as the music quiets, and increases again as it picks up.

It’s such an amazing thing to watch and I’m really interested to see if he has any particular affinity to classical music or is affected by it as he grows. If so, my father-in-law will most likely giggle like a little school girl because, well, that’s just my father-in-law.

I played a wide variety of music to each of my kids in utero and they both have musical affinites that are beyond my own.

We listen to classical or world music in the car and when I can’t stand it any more both of them are happy to sing along with me to Green Day, but conversations are not always so easy for me to follow.

A concerto was playing the other day (I don’t know which one or by whom) and my little boy said:

“Here comes the really interesting part.”

I wait for the interesting part and a few seconds later my 5 year old says,

    “That was interesting!”

My response was to try and keep my “huh?” inaudible.

the week before my wife’s first kid we saw Alien - you know, with the scene where the Alien bursts out of the man’s stomach, killing him in the process??

the week before second kid was born we saw that Keanu Reeves movie about armageddon, you know, the one with the scene where the demon bursts from the woman’s stomach, killing her in the process??

(btw, they were both emergency c-sections……..)

Maybe the children are writhing in pain, agony, and fear rather than enjoying the sweet sounds!

It’s an option, not likely, but who knows!

    Hi Rock,

Very good point, I thought of that too! However the movements differ from those he’s exhibited in a few instances when exposed to sudden, loud or abrasive noises which would be more likely to startle or instill fear.

    Thanks for writing,
    Bill
