Thanksgiving Traditions

by steve on November 22nd, 2006

In our family Thanksgiving is quite a hit. Last year we had 15 people in one house. This year, probably not so many but we are looking at maybe a dozen or so.

I also got to thinking about all the Holidays packed in at the end of the year. We have Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and then New Years Eve parties. Can I just say no more egg nog and comfort foods. All those precious hours of walking and getting into shape all summer long seem to get flushed down the drain.

Thanksgiving is the Holiday where we sit around food. All the others don’t have to be, but we make them that way.

How about songs. Tons and tons of Christmas songs. There is a New Years tune that gets played every year. Halloween doesn’t have any songs I can think of. What about Thanksgiving?

Isn’t Over the Hills and Through the Woods a Thanksgiving song?

Over the hills and through the woods
To grandmother’s house we go.
The horse knows the way
To carry the sleigh
Through the cold and drifting snow.

Is that how it goes? Who here goes to grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving? What is your Thanksgiving tradition?

We went over to my wife’s parent’s house for Thanksgiving and last week their stove kicked the bucket. They bought a new gas stove, but didn’t have the gas installed before the big day. Well, they have a nice large grill to feed a battalion and so we grilled the turkey. […]
