Should We Be Teaching 1st Graders About Global Warming?
Should we? Think about this long and hard. I know most of us already have our minds made up whether global warming is a real phenomena brought on by the overly wasteful human being or just a myth. Though I agree we should do all we can to keep our Earth clean and teach our children to recycle as much as we can, being resourceful and not wasteful.
But why tell 6 and 7 year olds that we are causing global warming when it cannot be proven? Ok Ok Al Gore says so, therefore it MUST be true.
By rant stems from an incident that happened to me about a week ago and was then brought back to the surface again this afternoon.
I run a business out of my home and I try to keep all the things I purchase for it out of the reach of my kids. Like I said… try. Well, one of those things I purchase every so often is printing paper for my nice trusty 3 in 1 printer. Well the kids like to take paper from the tray while I walk out of the room so they can draw. And you know how kids are. They draw 4 lines and then get another one. So I caught them wasting paper and I told them that they needed to not do that and they all could have one more piece of paper BUT THAT WAS IT.
Well my oldest daughter who is in 1st grade said, “Thats right. My teacher told us that we need to stop wasting paper because it causes the weather to be all weird and stuff.” I was like “huh?”
So she went on to tell me that her teacher said that if we use up all the paper from the trees then it would make the weather do weird stuff. And this is considered one of the best education systems in the entire country.
So today she told me we needed to spend less time driving and should walk more. I mean she even acted really weird about getting in the car. So I asked her why she didn’t want to drive. She told me her teacher said it would cause bad storms if we all continued to drive our cars every where.
I mean this is down right ridiculous. I can’t believe we are telling our 1st graders about something that is totally unable to be proven. It is different when it is parents who are teaching their kids what they believe in. For instance, if you are of a certain faith, I don’t see any problems if you are the parent to try and raise your kids that way. But the school is not supposed to teach faith based things such as global warming.
What are your thoughts on this and how would it be different if the teacher was teaching things like Christianity or Islam?

Global warming of some sort is actually documented. The average temperature is slightly higher than is has been for the past 200 years or so and does seem to show an upward trend. The question is whether or not it is statistically significant and whether or not it is being caused/accelerated by people.
This is not something to be taught in a 1st grade classroom. It is an acceptable subject to discuss (not teach, but discuss which means presenting both sides of the arguement) at a high school and college level when some of the students are at a mental capacity to be able to think for themselves. It is sad they are brainwashing your daughter. However this is what the purpose of the public educational system has alway been. It is about control not empowering the people and providing with the background in basic facts to be able to make intelligent decision on their own, because if people could do this they wouldn’t need the government to baby sit them.
