Rockabye Baby, lullabies for the twisted

by Bill on January 14th, 2008

If Twinkle Twinkle Little Star doesn’t quite cut it for you and your baby, try lulling him or her to sleep with the sounds of Metallica, Nine Inch Nails or The Ramones. Sound a little odd? I thought so too when a friend sent me a link me the other day.

The link was to the Rockabye Baby collection, which claims “the soothing sounds of the glockenspiel, vibraphone, mellotron and other instruments will lull your baby into a sweet slumber” playing the tunes of popular musicians. It’s a cool concept that has entire albums of baby-ized music from a variety of artists, including everyone from U2, The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys, to Tool, Nine Inch nails and Bjork.

It’s quite an interesting take on music that we’re all used to, made baby appropriate. Amazon has samples that you can listen to online, and you can download them a track at a time if interested in a particular song. I have to admit that many of the songs do sound very similar when played in this venue, but they’re interesting none the less.

A couple personal favorites include the renditions of Nirvana’s All Apologies and Coldplay’s Clocks.

I love Rockabye Baby. I got the Coldplay CD as a gift and my son goes to bed to it every night. This was, on the nights I lay down with him, I enjoy it too! It’s a great little investment…

Traditional lullabies never did cut it for ours. For a long time the Laurel and Hardy Classic ‘The Trail of the Lonesome Pine’ would silence any tears and sooth her to sleep. We tried singing it ourselves and it worked equally.

So then we got more ambitious. Smokey Robinson never fails to please, and even ‘Tracks of My Tears’ delivered in my own croaky 3am tenor seems to cut through the screaming and induce a relaxed state in her 11 month old heart.

Maybe I’ll give it a go with ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ tonight.

If you don’t feel able to vocalise yourself I suggest don’t bother with the Rockabye versions and play the originals - you’ll both enjoy it more.
