Plumbing woes and baby gear grows

by Bill on April 14th, 2008

If you have had the pleasure of owning an older home, you know that things are prone to go wrong and are a major pain in the butt to fix. Our home is about 110 years old and for the most part in good shape. For the most part.

However last week a water leak in the plumbing in our 2nd floor bathroom started coming through kitchen ceiling. The water was minimal and there was no damage to the plaster ceiling, but the paint did bubble a bit. We called a plumber who confirmed our fears that we would either have to take down our kitchen ceiling or rip up our bathroom floor in order to replace the pipes.

I opted for ripping up the bathroom floor. I eventually wanted to refurbish our bathroom, so I figured I could do part of it in the process, starting with a new floor. I also have a new toilet and vanity so it should look somewhat improved. With a great deal of my father’s help (thanks, Dad!), we’ve ripped up the flooring and removed the toilet and vanity from the bathroom in preparation for the plumbing work that begins tomorrow. It looks nothing remotely like what it did a few days ago, more of a shell of a room than a bathroom.

A caveat to this story is that we only have one bathroom.

So we’ve packed up and moved all our junk into my in-laws for a day or two until the plumbing work is completed and we once again have a functional toilet and running water. It’s not that big of a deal, but in the process of packing it made me realize how much gear is associated with moving a baby anywhere. Of course we have the prerequisite stroller, car seat, Baby Bjorn and diaper bag that follow us everywhere. But there’s also the additional arsenal of diapers, the large container of wipes, his bouncy, night clothes, day clothes, multiple changes of clothes that he will drool through or spit up on, pillows for my wife…. and then all the stuff for our dog.

It’s quite a departure from what I used to deem necessary to be away from home for a few days. I always had a gym bag with some basic clothes and toiletries in my trunk that I found sufficient for just about anything. Now we can’t go anywhere without a fully stocked vehicle driving to a fully stocked house which already has many baby amenities.

I’ll post some pictures when the bathroom is done. I forgot to take any photos of the room prior to it’s deconstruction, but have a few of it all torn apart. Hopefully the final product is worth the wait.
