Inside Fatherhood

Mumbai’s first adoptive father

by Bill on October 10th, 2007

According to an article in The Times of India, 33 year old Sandeep Soparrkar has become the city’s first adoptive father. After a four year process of getting certified to adopt, the unmarried man is now father to a two and a half year old who had been found abandoned by city police.

According to Soparkar,

“I grew up in a family where there have been some adoptions and I thought it is a beautiful thing to do. So when I felt I was financially capable of looking after a child, I decided to go ahead,” he said. He wanted to adopt a girl child but learnt that Indian law does not allow a single male to adopt a girl.

“For single women, the age bar is 20, for a single man it is 30 before he can adopt. A woman can adopt both girls and boys. The scrutiny is not as detailed for a woman,” he said.

Soparkar noted that he had undergone rather intense scrutiny, including an AIDS test as the first male to approach the adoption agency.

    Hi…

Tons of CONGRATULATIONS to Mr.Soparrkar…You can be proud of your action, as many won’t do this unless one have immense drive to father a child, lots of love in the heart and care towards the children. I feel extremely thankful towards the authorities for not being rude to him. Infact, I have been thinking for few years to adopt a child, but I need a girl child. I went through the informations and came to know that, the rules are against male…Anyways, now I plan to sponsor a girl child, for which the rules are in favour…If anyone read this, and had ever come across any point it law which allow to adopt a girl child by a male, please let me know through my mail ID.

Once again, wishing Mr.Soparrkar and the little prince a WONDERFUL life ahead…

    Regards,
    Dr.Sajith Chandran
