More Chinese toy recalls for lead content

by Bill on September 28th, 2007

The New York Times reports that there are yet more problems with lead levels in Chinese-manufactured toys.

“Amid a fresh wave of toy recalls yesterday, a consumer advocacy group said it had found hazardous levels of lead in many toys made out of vinyl plastic, potentially expanding the scope of testing and recalls of contaminated toys.

A random testing of more than 50 plastic toys found high lead content in 11 of them, according to Mike Schade, a campaigner for the Center for Health, Environment and Justice, which helped organize the testing.”

Among the results of the tests performed by the Center for Health, Environment and Justice was that the level of lead in a Go Diego Go backpack was more than 7 times the legal standard. Two other particularly egregious offenders were a Superfly monkey and a pair of Circo Lulu boots.

I’m beginning to find this almost conspiratorial. In this NYT article alone, the following fourteen products are mentioned:

Go Diego Go backpack
Superfly monkey
Circo Lulu boots
Thomas & Friends wooden railway toys:
- black cargo car
- Toad vehicle
- olive green Sodor Cargo Box
- green maple tree
- signal base accessories.
Target David Kirk Happy Giddy children’s garden trowel
Target Sunny Patch Safari children’s chair
Toys “R” Us vinyl baby bibs
Wal-Mart Neon Writing Slate
Wal-Mart Spider-Man pencil case

Just a small reminder, ingesting lead can cause severe neurological problems… so why aren’t these things tested BEFORE they get into children’s hands?! Maybe it really is time to start playing with cardboard boxes.

Wow. That’s crazy. It’s like we are at the tip of the iceberg. I wonder how much more will get discovered before the holiday season. Our plan to go with one big present (fish tank) is starting to sound better every day.

I can’t remember the times when my two preferred the box over the toy. With the box, they were able to create whatever they wanted. My kids created everything from spaceships to guitars from a box and some markers and when they were toddlers, they were quite happy just to climb in the box and climb out again! It’s a scary world that we live in now!

I’m so fed up of seeing these lead recalls. How many of them are we going to have to go through before toy companies stop outsourcing to companies that don’t have proper lead safety standards?!

[…] I have posted before about toy recalls for high lead content, but it doesn’t seem to be stopping. Chief Family Officer has some info on the latest round of toys found in violation of safe level of lead. […]
