More Chinese toy recalls for lead content…. AGAIN!

by Bill on October 6th, 2007

I have posted before about toy recalls for high lead content, but it doesn’t seem to be stopping. Chief Family Officer has some info on the latest round of toys found in violation of safe level of lead.

On the most recent list of items I find the presence of a Baby Einstein product to be particularly interesting. The product name alone sound somewhat pretentious and it’s claims somewhat steep. However, the fact that it contains unsafe levels of lead means that there is a good chance it could affect children in a manner opposite to the claims of making them an Einstein.

This has passed the point of ridiculous.

Although the dangers of lead are often discussed within the context of media fear mongering (Will your child be dead by 11:15? Find out tonight at 11 on WNEWS.)  here is some information from the National Safety Council about the health effects of lead exposure.

We americans want cheap toys for our children. I have a small toy business I run from my garage and find my costs are skyrocketing. This latest round of recalls has been good for my business, but not for the right reason.

We forget to look for the quality in a toy before we purchase the items for our children. I as a small business tests the duribility by letting my three year old grandaugther play with the toys I make. I will not selling anything that I would not let my own grandchildren play with.

Lets hope we can find a few manufactures that will step up and build quality american made toys that are safe.

I imagine most of this is overblown since I doubt anything much has changed in recent years.. and we’re all still here. You’d think these companies having products made would know what is being put in them though. That’s what scares me.
