Ken Burns - Civil War Documentary

by steve on May 8th, 2007

Who has seen Ken Burns Civil War Documentary? Maybe I should ask if you were forced to watch it in history class. I remember a day when I could not stand the thought of history. It almost made me vomit just to think about history, dates, battles, when tea was thrown off a ship in Boston, or what the heck happened in 1066AD. What was the sole purpose behind the rise of the Civil War, WWI, WWII, the Korean War, Vietnam, and so on and so forth.

It wasn’t until maybe 7 or 8 years ago I had this growing interest in something I almost despised. It was like I woke up one morning and my interest for history was there. Not quite like being shot, not that sudden, but it grew over the next 2 or 3 years. Now I can’t get enough history. I love to learn about what people were like years ago, in cultures I had no idea even existed. I would have to say that my strongest interest is in American History. To me it is fascinating to learn about my founding fathers and how things came about. It teaches us why we are the way we are today.

So I have rented via Netflix, the Ken Burns Documentary on the Civil War. The most amazing aspect of his film is that all of the pictures are real; taken at that time. I find Hollywood films great as they mimic time periods through costume and speech, but there is nothing like looking at real photos taken a time in history our great great great grandfathers were part of. The film is 12 hours long and nothing but real photos throughout it. There is also words and quotes that were written during that time that are shared. It just really helps to accurately portray that time period.

So who has seen it? If not, you should really watch it. Might be something to show your kids in segments if they are middle or high school age.
