Keeping the pregnant and young cool

by Bill on August 10th, 2007

My wife and I are on a short babymoon (vacation before the baby comes) at the beach this weekend so I thought mentioning staying comfortable in the heat and sun was a timely topic. Keeping cool during the summer months is especially important for pregnant women and children alike. Pregnant women have difficulty regulating their own body temperature, which can cause harm to the baby if it spikes too high. On Almost A Dad I mentioned a few ways to help keep expectant mommies cool, like going to the movies to enjoy the AC, swimming and frequent showers, or even drives in air conditioned cars.

Abel over at ParentWonder has prepared a list of fifteen items to help keep kids cool in the summer months and prevent dehydration. He makes some good suggestions like eating more fruits and vegetables for their high water content and not going shirtless. As well as covering the basics of drinking more water and avoiding sun overexposure.

And of course, always wear sunscreen; sunburns at early ages are highly linked to skin cancer later in life. Pregnant women have various skin issues such as linea nigra or stretch marks, and tanning or burning can irritate these conditions.
