How to Make Your Own Baby Wipes
Just recently I posted a recipe for Dijon Chicken Breasts. This made me think of a recipe for home made baby wipes I posted a while back on my personal blog. Daddy Daze posted it as his blog as well so I thought maybe I would try and get some mileage out of it.
Well, like I had mentioned before, my wife should actually be getting credit for this but I make them all the time and it saves us a lot of money. When you have 4 kids you start to learn ways to cut corners and manufacture your own products instead of buying them all.
Here is the list of products you will need:
*Rubbermaid 6 Cups (1.4L) containers from the plastic/housewares department at Walmart
*Bottle of Equate Baby Oil
*Bottle of Equate Baby Bath
*Roll of Bounty paper towels
*Sharp Knife
*Running Hot Water
Once you get all the ingredients from above what you do is take the knife and cut the paper towels in half. This is the hardest part. Cut it so you have 2 short rolls of paper towels. Place one half roll into the Rubbermaid plastic container (cut edge facing down). Squirt 3 or 4 teaspoons of Baby Oil and 3 or 4 teaspoons of Baby Bath onto the top end of the paper towels. Spread it around evenly across the top. Trickle warm to hot water all over the top of the paper towels and let it filter down through entire roll until plenty damp. I normally trickle until there is standing water at the bottom of the container, then I tip over container to pour out excess water. Place the lid on top of the container for minimum 10 minutes. Take off lid and pull out cardboard roll in the paper towels.
Pull out paper towels from the center of roll and apply to baby.
This normally lasts a lot longer and is cheaper than the premade store bought stuff. This may sound gross but the Bounty paper towels clean up poop so much better especially with the dimpled paper. Store bought wipes have smooth edges and tend to smear the poop rather than pick it up.

Baby wipes are really cheap at the Dollar store :p
Maybe you should have posted a generic paper towel cause buying those bounties are not saving you too much :p

Even using the best paper towels will save you tons of money. When I was changing 2 diapered kids at the same time I was going through a half a roll (because you cut the roll in half) of Bounty in about 1 1/2 weeks. So we were going through one roll of Bounty paper towels in about 3 weeks.
Once you use Bounty you can’t switch back. What was normally 5 or 6 (or more) swipes with the ones you buy I was now only doing 3 or 4 swipes and cleaning it all up. Plus there is a lot more towel in those Bounty rolls than you think.
I am not saying you can’t save money at the dollar store, but we have found that this is not just less expensive, but by far and it even seems to clean up better than anything they have out on the market.

Thanks for the tip. I am almost out of wipes. I buy the Bounty paper towels when they are on sale. I usually get them at Food Lion when they are $4.99 or $5.50 for an 8 pack.

[…] I was reading Inside Fatherhood today (a b5 blog) and he has instructions for making your own baby wipes. I’ve used washcloths before, but this is even better! Thanks Steve for the thrifty and frugal idea. […]

In regards to making baby wipes. I use an electric knife. This is real easy…can’t imagine using just a knife. I do things a little different though. Cut the roll of papertowels in half. Then I take the cardboard out of the center. Place one cut half of papertowels in the container. In a pyrex measuring cup I put 1 1/2 cups water. Add 2-3 tablespoons baby wash, 1-2 tablespoons baby oil. Mix and then pour over the roll. Put lid on container, let towels absorb the liquid. Wipes work great. I have found it ppays to buy a good papertowel.
