E.T. glasses in ‘82 and more lead toy recalls in ‘07

by Bill on October 8th, 2007

I remember way back in 1982 wanting an E.T.-decorated glass from Pizza Hut. The movie was all the rage and I had to have it. We didn’t eat fast food but once in a long while, so I was excited when I finally got my parents to consider taking me there so I could get my grail, er, E.T. glass.

However, I never saw that E.T. glass. Mom and dad told me we’d go in a few days and in that time all the E.T. decorated glasses were puled from the market due to high levels of paint on the glass. Noooooooo!

wooden_pull_toy.jpgAnyway, I thought an anecdote would shed a little light on how long the presence of lead in consumer products has been a problem and offer some variety to my usual posts about lead toy recalls. This time, KB Toys is voluntarily recalling the Wooden Pull Toy Wagon With Blocks, Flip-Flop Alphabet Blocks and the 10-in-1 Activity Learning Cart.

Geez! Seems like we should all just make our own toys out of plants or something! You would think that these manufacturers/distributors would not be in such a rush to be the next ET glass (we had 1 in my house!) and would take more time to be absolutely sure of safety!

I remember that recall of the E.T. glasses. I had one. I would think that 15+ yrs later that these companies would learn and/or figure it out. But then again what do I know.

    I would love to win!!!

I heard that Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, and some other stores are randomly pulling toys off the shelves and testing them. This is getting crazy!

This is so depressing. Nothing is safe. Everything is bad for you. How about a list of healthy and safe toys?

It’s really scary for me. I have a 3 month old and I just read that one of his toys is on the recall list. I can’t believe that I have to check on his toys before giving them to him. And what if he has already been playing and chewing on them? Anyway, I think some of the natural toy companies (although expensive) are the way to go.

My oh My! All of this lead business and toy recalls makes me want to learn how to whittle. Maybe I could make my own toys.

So many recalls this year, it just really makes you stop and rethink the way you shop and what you buy.

I remember those ET glasses! We had one of them. THAT explains sooooooooo much! lol

Makes me glad my son is past the toy stage for the most part. He never was one to put things in his mouth, which I’ve always been thankful for.
