Quick exercise tips for managing parental stress

Stress comes with being a parent or expectant parent. It is inevitable with any part of life, but parental woes seem to be particularly weighty.
Successfully managing stress can make a huge impact on your life. Less (or managed) stress means better parenting, and exercise is one of the best ways to achieve that end. I […]

Graco thinks dads are stupid

Our new Graco stroller travel system arrived the other day and I couldn’t wait to get home from work to set it up. Why? Well, for one I love assembling and building things, and for two, I am incredibly excited about the forthcoming kid.
I walked out to get the box that was sitting on […]

Fathers spending more time with kids

A recent Newsweek article points out that fathers are now spending more time with their children than their predecessors did twenty years ago.
Dads are spending more time in child care, and it’s not just the fun playing-with-kids stuff, it’s across the board. They do all the basic caregiver kinds of things: the feeding, the diaper-changing, […]

Nursery progress

My baby’s room now has walls. I’m not one to rush out and get something just because everyone else has it, but I have to say that putting up walls is one of the better ‘follow the crowd’ decisions I’ve made.
Tearing down the walls
Just to recap, I’ve torn out the old walls, ceiling and insulation […]

Jonny Quest and kinetic-energy-of-peace

Many of the things I remember fondly from my childhood would no longer be looked upon well by many parent’s groups, certain cartoons in particular. I remember thinking that Race Bannon from Jonny Quest was a bad ass because when he shot at a villainous pterodactyl or mad scientist he actually hit his target, but […]

Yesterday was Father’s Day in Nepal

I inadvertently let it slip by without a mention, but September 11, 2007 was Father’s Day in Nepal.
Less than two weeks after Australia and New Zealand celebrate dads this year, the Nepalese celebrate Father’s Day on the “New Moon of September (Bhadra as per Lunar Calendar).”
Happy (belated) Father’s Day to dads in Nepal!

Fatherhood Facts?

The National Fatherhood Initiative has a listing of the top fatherhood facts. As I looked over the list I was immediately struck by how negative the list is. It focuses primarily on the side effects of bad fathers and broken homes rather than the positive influence of involved and caring dads. I’m just rather […]

The Scrubs outlook on pregnancy

Scrubs has got to be one of my favorite TV shows. Syndication now makes it possible for me to watch at least four episodes a night, but my schedule as an expectant father has robbed me of the luxury of time to do so. I rarely watch much more than a half hour of TV […]

Selling baby

My family and I spent this weekend at my cousin’s wedding (congrats Joe and Holly!) which provided me some valuable time with my older brother. He lives 400 miles away, which makes time together hard to come by, but always enjoyable.
My brother is a stay at home with two kids, aged 2 and 4, […]

Home paternity tests?!

In an unbelievable commentary on society, Consumer Genetics of Sunnyvale, California is now selling paternity and genetics tests that can be “performed” at home. I put performed in quotes because the home part involves pilfering anything from a strand of hair from a brush to ABC (already been chewed) chewing gum and sending it in […]
