3rd Graders Plan Attack on Teacher
This is downright disturbing. Apparently up to 9 third graders at Center Elementary School in Georgia were planning to attack their teacher with a steak knife. The 8 and 9 year olds were upset because the teacher scolded a student for standing on a chair.
Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this story is the calculating manner in which the group was plotting their offensive; different children had discrete tasks such as covering windows and cleaning up after the attack. Children brought a broken steak knife to school as well as handcuffs, duct tape and a paperweight (which I’m assuming was to be used to strike the teacher). The plot was foiled when a student tipped off officials that one of the students had brought a weapon to school.
A spokesperson for the school said that the children had been given punishment “up to and including long-term suspension.” How about expulsion and some very intensive counseling?! Something that makes these kids realize the severity of their actions rather than not being able to go to school. The parents have a very strong responsibility to take some corrective action as the school apparently will not. My concern is that it won’t happen. This behavior speaks to deep psychological problems that their parents have apparently gone unnoticed by parents. I don’t mean to trivialize it, but maybe asking the kids to tell them about their school day would have either raised suspicions on the parents’ behalf or mitigated the circumstances that would cause children to do such a thing. I only hope there is more to the punishment than what is contained in the school rep’s terse statement.
WAYCROSS, Ga. - A group of third-graders plotted to attack their teacher, bringing a broken steak knife, handcuffs, duct tape and other items for the job and assigning children tasks including covering the windows and cleaning up afterward, police said Tuesday.
The plot by as many as nine boys and girls at Center Elementary School in south Georgia was a serious threat, Waycross Police Chief Tony Tanner said.
“We did not hear anybody say they intended to kill her, but could they have accidentally killed her? Absolutely,” Tanner said. “We feel like if they weren’t interrupted, there would have been an attempt. Would they have been successful? We don’t know.”
The children, ages 8 and 9, were apparently mad at the teacher because she had scolded one of them for standing on a chair, Tanner said. A prosecutor said they are too young to be charged with a crime under Georgia law.
School officials alerted police Friday after a pupil tipped off a teacher that a girl had brought a weapon to school, Tanner said.
Police seized a broken steak knife, handcuffs, duct tape, electrical and transparent tape, ribbons and a crystal paperweight from the students, who apparently intended to use them against the teacher, Tanner said.

I read 1 article stating that if the students are too young to be prosacuted they should be made to go to court appointed counseling. There is a definate problem that has gone undected or ignored if the students are even thinking of doing something that drastic for being disciplined for something so minor. Kids are smarter then people give them credit for. Kids need to know that they need to be held accountable for their actions. These children are our future!!!

It is the fault of uninvolved parents, absent parents, parents hwo are too busy for their own children or those who just take this stuff for granted, thinking they dont need to “talk” with their kids b/c “my kids would never do this” It is our part as parents to see to it that we teach our children right from wrong/ Thats not to say they will all follow in the right steps but for God’s sake people, this type of behavior has to stop! Yes, our tv’s are full of nonsense and violence, but it is up to us to be good role models and to raise responisible, sensible children. The sad part is generally speaking, parents of these children usually do blame something else other than themselves. It really makes me sad to think of all the stories we hear so often involving young ones and violence. It is time for the government and do-gooders to butt out and allow us to be parents.
